Counting the Omer

The Torah commands that on the second day of  Pesah, an Omer (a measure) of barley was to be brought to the Kohen as an offering to God. Beginning with that day, we are to count each day until we complete the counting of 49 days or seven weeks. After the destruction of the Temple, the Omer of barley was no longer brought as an offering. The counting of the days continued. By counting these days, we establish a bridge between Passover, the Festival of Freedom, to Shavuot, which celebrates the giving of the Torah. Shavuot, which falls on the 50th day, reminds us that freedom must be accompanied by the acceptance of responsibility. The counting or Sefirah takes place each night after dark, this year  starting on Tuesday night, April 15th.

In ancient times, the Sefirah period was a time of rejoicing but it is now observed as a time of mourning because of the many tragedies that struck the Jewish people during this time.

Sale of Hametz

In preparing for Passover, one of the most time-consuming and challenging jobs is to clean our homes and remove all forms of Hametz. Since we are not permitted to own or derive benefit from Hametz during Passover, the easiest solution is to destroy it all. But this could be an expensive proposition. Jewish law provides for a technical procedure where an agent is appointed to sell your Hametz to a non-Jew. Rev. Asher Tannenbaum is the Shaare Zion agent through whom Mehirat Hametz or the selling of Hametz may be carried out. You may contact him in person, by phone 514.481.7727, ext. 237, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or fax 514.481.1219 no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 14th. The form to fill out and return is inserted with this bulletin. Thank you for participating in this important commandment.
